Direct Tax Manager

Based in Solihull – Hybrid working (3 days in the office / 2 working from home)

We are looking for a Direct Tax Manager to join our friendly and dynamic team here at Waterstones in Solihull. Working in our finance function, this is a new role that has been created to join our expanding tax team. You will be managing direct tax compliance for the Waterstones Group and provide support to the Head of Tax with tax compliance across the wider (UK headed) global group as well other UK advisory projects.

What you will be doing

  • Manages direct tax compliance processes for the UK and EU group companies to ensure that all statutory requirements and deadlines are met, including proactively managing any tax authority enquiries.
  • Responsible for regular tax payment calculations for all UK and EU companies. for monthly and quarterly tax reporting packages. Must have good experience with Deferred Tax, Tax Journals and Tax Accounting concepts.
  • Supports with the Group's CbCR and Pillar 2 compliance, including liaising with advisers and supporting the Head of Tax in evaluating technology and systems solutions to be deployed across the group.
  • Supports the Head of Tax in advising the business on all Corporation Tax matters.
  • Contributes the ongoing development and implementation of policies and procedure, and maintains best practice, in respect of tax risk management.
  • Considers and, where appropriate, implements CT planning initiatives in line with the Group's commercial needs and strategy to mitigate tax exposures where possible.
  • Prepare and submit PSA return and review P11Ds.
  • Work closely with Payroll and HR teams, advising on employment tax matters as needed.
  • Maintains awareness of, and advises the business on, changes in tax law and practice including assisting with the implementation of system changes required.

What we need from you

  • Essential: Chartered Accountant and/or Chartered Tax Advisor. Ideally you will be Top tier trained with experience across a wide range of UK Corporation Tax matters. including UK CT compliance and reporting.
  • Experience of Tax reporting under US GAAP is preferable but not essential.
  • Proficiency with OneSource Corporate tax is preferred.
  • Experience with improving, automating, and implementing tax processes and workflows
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
